10 Questions to Ask a Wedding Photographer

The questions (and answers ) you need to determine you are choosing a wedding photographer you will LOVE!

Here’s the deal. We all know that choosing a wedding photographer is BEYOND important, but also hard!! There are so many photographers across the country, and it can be hard to discern their credibility. Remember, you weren’t born knowing how to discern and choose a wedding photographer, so it’s ok to come into the process with a lot of questions! I’ve put together a list of the 10 questions to ask before you choose your final pick. Ready? Here goes!

Q: How long have you been a photographer?

A: I would suggest looking for someone with 2+ years of experience in the photography industry. The more the better! Bonus points if they specialize in weddings. One thing a lot of brides don’t realize is that a photographer is the main point of reference throughout the wedding day (unless you are working with a planner and coordinator). Choosing a wedding photographer who can help guide you through the ups and downs of your wedding day is really important!!

Q: What gear do you use?

A: This can be pretty technical and confusing, but I would look for a photographer who has a variety of gear, including flash, and who can EXPLAIN it in a way that you understand! If they seem confused, or don’t seem to know what they’re talking about, that is a bad sign. The main thing to look for here? A confidence in their own understanding of their technical gear.

Q: Are you comfortable using flash?

A: This is a HUGE deal! Most people have receptions that need flash, so make sure your photographer is comfortable working with artificial light!

Q: How will you back up my photos?

A: Your photos should be stored in 2+ places AT LEAST! Most photographers aren’t contractually liable to keep your images after they have been delivered, but that doesn’t mean they won’t. Make sure you are very clear on your photographers policies!

Q: What perks do you offer for your brides?

A: Most photographers have incentives for brides, like bridal or engagement guides. Make sure that you feel like the photographer is offering you VALUE and support throughout your engagement session! You don’t want to feel like they just want your check. The answer to this question can also help you determine what level of comfort and experience they will bring to your wedding day.

Q: What additional fees do you charge?

A: There are a wide variety of additional charges that photographers can have. Clarify what their additional fees are, and if any of them apply!

Q: How do you select what photos I receive?

A: Every photographer has a different view on what photos get delivered, and every bride has a different preference. I have had couples tell me they wished they could have had EVERY image, even the blurry or awkward ones. I’ve heard other brides say they only want to see the absolute best images, even if that means just 50. Make sure that your vision for your wedding gallery aligns with your potential photographers!

Q: How would you describe your working style throughout the wedding day?

A: This should feel true to YOU and your wedding day. I personally believe that there are times your wedding photographer should be invisible, and times they should be front and center! Some photographers are more editorial and do a lot of heavy posing throughout the day. Other photographers take a completely documentary and hands off approach. Your intuition and vision for your wedding day will help you determine what capturing style would be the best for your day.

Q: How many weddings do you shoot per year?

A: The more weddings your photographer has, the less attention they can give to you! I would look for someone who shoots between 10-20. This shows that they are in demand, and that they are focused and have time for each individual bride! I personally would avoid choosing a wedding photographer who takes more than 30 weddings yearly (but I LOVE a personal experience).

    Q: Can I see a sample gallery?

A: YES! Before you even consider a photographer, make sure you LOVE their work! If you want to view some of our sample galleries, you can check them out here!

I know, information OVERLOAD!!

Those are the basic, need-to-knows. Beyond these answers, please make sure when choosing a photographer that you vibe with their personality! There is nothing worse than having someone there on your wedding day (ALL DAY LONGGGG) who you don’t get along with! Be sure that you feel connected in a positive way, because your photographer will be the first vendor to see you in the morning, and the last one to see you before you leave!
