Photographing an Engagement Session in One of New Zealand’s Dreamiest Spots
If you’ve ever seen a photo of Lake Tekapo, you probably gasped. I know I did the first time I laid eyes on that unreal turquoise water, the lavender-hued lupins in bloom, the thousands of cairns on the shoreline, and the Southern Alps casting their moody, majestic glow in the distance.
But nothing compares to experiencing it with a couple head over heels in love.
As a destination engagement photographer, I get to explore some of the most breathtaking corners of the world with incredible couples—and Lake Tekapo, New Zealand? It’s the kind of place that feels like it was made for romance. I spent 2 weeks traveling all over the South Island of New Zealand, and my time in Lake Tekapo was my absolute favorite.
Why Lake Tekapo is a Dreamy Portrait Session Location
1. The colors are next-level surreal.
Lake Tekapo is famous for its striking turquoise water, caused by glacier-ground rock flour. That pop of color creates a dreamy backdrop that looks like it was lifted from a storybook—and it changes with the light throughout the day. Morning brings soft pastels, while golden hour adds warmth and depth.
2. The lupins bloom like magic (November to January).
If you’re lucky enough to visit during lupin season, the lakeside transforms into a sea of purple, pink, and peach wildflowers. It’s a seasonal highlight and adds a playful, romantic element to engagement photos.
3. The stargazing is insane.
Lake Tekapo is part of the UNESCO Dark Sky Reserve, so when the sun sets, the sky comes alive with stars. Finish your engagement session, then head back to a picnic under the stars.

Behind the Scenes: A Day at the Lake with Vanessa & Justin
I met Vanessa and Justin for their Lake Tekapo portrait session just before sunset, and as the sun sank behind the hills, we all just stood there in awe for a second. Vanessa & Justin live full-time in Lake Tekapo, and wanted some portraits in the place they call home—my heart was already full.
We headed a little off the beaten path to catch some quiet moments away from the main lookout points. I always make space for couples to slow down and really feel the moment—because these sessions aren’t just about pretty photos. They’re about capturing connection in a place that feels a little like magic.

Tips for Planning Your Lake Tekapo Engagement Session
- Best Time to Visit: November through April gives you the best weather and, if you time it right, those stunning lupin blooms.
- What to Wear: Flowy outfits in soft neutrals or earthy tones pop beautifully against the lake’s color palette.
- Travel Tip: Consider staying a night or two in Tekapo to soak it all in—and maybe sneak in a hot pool soak at Tekapo Springs. We stayed at the Lake Tekapo Lodge, and it was my absolute favorite stay from the entire trip.
Why Choose a Destination Photographer?
Having someone who’s traveled these roads, scouted the best hidden spots, and knows how to adapt to unpredictable weather (hello, moody mountain skies) is so valuable. I don’t just show up with a camera—I help you create an experience.
Whether it’s calming pre-session jitters, guiding you to the best light, or laughing through the wind together, I’m in it with you. And trust me, we’ll leave with not just stunning photos, but wild, beautiful memories.
