5 Tips for Utah Salt Flats Portrait Sessions

5 Important things to know for planning your session at the Utah Salt Flats, plus outfit inspiration for your Salt Flats engagement session!

The Salt Flats are a STUNNING location in north western Utah. They are a DRIVVVVE, but so worth it if you’re looking for a bright, clean, unique backdrop to your portraits. If you’re considering this location for your portraits, here are a few of my tips.

  1. Bring snacks and water, the drive is long, and it’s all in the middle of nowhere (this is NOT an exaggeration. Please google driving distance from where you are planning to stay FAR in advance so that you are prepared).
  2. Due to the middle of nowhere fact, take a bathroom break before you leave Salt Lake! Sometimes the bathrooms at the Salt Flats are closed, so it’s best to make sure you’re good to go! 😉
  3. Where we meet to shoot is at a rest stop on the side of the road! You can drive right onto the Salt Flats from the rest stop, BUT it is a separated highway, so make sure you don’t miss the pull of-you won’t be able to turn back around until the next exit! Luckily, the exit just past the Salt Flats (heading towards Wendover), has a gas station!
  4. The Salt Flats can get REALLY windy. PLEASE bring hair touch up items just in case! I also recommend bringing comfy clothes to change into for the drive home.
  5. The salt at the Salt Flats can be destructive to any leather bottomed shoes. I didn’t know anything about this, but Austin did & he won’t wear any of his really nice dress shoes to the Salt Flats. Who even knew that some mens shoes were leather on the bottom?? Not me, haha. There is a spigot at the exit for washing off shoes. I highly recommend doing a quick rinse after your session, and bringing a comfy pair of shoes for the main walking times.
